As the oversight body at the highest level of leadership, boards play a critical role in fostering an organization that prioritizes, supports, and invests in diversity, inclusion, and equity. This session will address the nature and scope of boards’ responsibility in EDI. The speakers will address questions such as: “What does EDI mean in today’s business climate?” and “What are the risks to the organization and the directors if the board does not fulfill its duty in this area?”

SPEAKERS:

Mary Larson, ICD.d, is a Partner with MNP’s Consulting Services group in Montreal. She is the national leader of the Firm’s Strategy Practice and dedicates significant energy to the areas of ESG and DEI. Mary helps clients clarify and build alignment around their strategies, build leadership capacity and embed cultures that foster outstanding execution. She is particularly focused on working with C-suite executives and CEOs. Drawing on her extensive business experience and skill in asking the right questions, Mary helps clients become more effective in aligning their teams around their work and successfully addressing the issues that drive both behavior and culture.

Mary has worked with clients across North and South America, Europe, and Asia with McKinsey and A.T. Kearney and has held senior executive positions with McDonald’s Corporation in the U.S. and Alcan in Canada.

She serves as a member of the Advisory Committee of Triasima Investments, is the board chair of McGill’s School for Continuing Studies, and is a board member of the Chez Doris Foundation.

Sandra Porteous, B.Ed, M.Ed, is a Senior Manager of Consulting Services with MNP’s Consulting Group in Toronto and works on our DEI National Practice.

Sandra has created multi-year Diversity, Equity and Inclusion & Accessibility Strategies for Crown Corporations, Federal and Provincial Government Agencies, and private organizations. Her lifelong passion for equity work started as a journalist in male-dominated news organizations and most recently saw her becoming the first Director of Inclusion and Engagement for both CBC and the Ontario Transit agency – Metrolinx.

She has conducted Focus Groups with members of Equity Seeking groups that led to key actions and substantive changes to policies and processes – including unbiased hiring practices, meeting culture, and tracking workforce demographics. She has worked with municipalities and federal government employees to specifically apply a DEI lens to their audits, evaluations, and service reviews. Sandra has experience with Affirmative Inquiry, Growth Mindset (vs Fixed Mindset) training, identification of DEI Goals and Metrics and designing training around Bias, How to Be an Ally, Microaggressions, Building an Anti-Racist organization and removing bias from HR Processes. She has worked with various teams to ensure they are culturally competent and has created several internal Leadership Programs, including the Developing Diverse Employees Leadership program at CBC.
