Dr. Carol Liao, Associate Professor, UBC Allard Law, and Shona McGlashan, Vice-President Governance, Vancity Credit Union, have over 30 years’ experience working and leading in corporations, public service, and academia.

Carol and Shona deliver workshops to organizations on gender, race, and unconscious bias in corporate culture. Senior management participate in open and safe learning discussions on how to address systemic barriers that impede advancement from historically marginalized groups.

Entirely through word-of-mouth recommendations, Carol and Shona have delivered multiple sessions to a range of organizations over the years, including small private companies, non-profits and charities, large multinational corporations, and regulatory agencies.

SPEAKER BIOS: 

Shona McGlashan is Vice-President of Governance at Vancity Credit Union.

Originally from Scotland, Shona began her career in the UK’s House of Commons, providing professional and procedural support to parliamentary committees and the Speaker. Since then she has held senior governance and policy roles on both sides of the Atlantic, including working as Chief Governance Officer at Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), and Executive Director of the Vancouver Police Board. Over the course of her career, she has led governance, corporate affairs/ issues management, privacy, and diversity and inclusion functions. An inspiring and passionate leader and mentor, Shona sits on the boards of Bard on the Beach and the Vancity Community Foundation. She is always delighted to talk about governance, Shakespeare, supporting mental health, and feminism. A voracious reader, she would love to hear about your favourite novel. Shona lives in Vancouver with her husband and two awesome kids.

Dr. Carol Liao is an Associate Professor at the UBC Allard School of Law and the UBC Sauder Distinguished Scholar of the Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics, UBC Sauder School of Business.

She is the Director of the Centre for Business Law, a national research centre that also oversees business experiential learning programs at Allard Law. Her research focuses on corporate governance, sustainability, and business ethics.

Carol is the Principal co-Investigator of the Canada Climate Law Initiative, providing climate governance strategies to corporate and pension boards in the transition to a net-zero carbon economy. She is also a long-time steering committee member of the Themis International Network of Female Business Scholars.

Prior to academia, Dr. Liao was a senior associate in the New York Mergers & Acquisitions Group of Shearman & Sterling LLP and a former judicial clerk of the BC Court of Appeal. She lives in Vancouver with her partner and three children.
