CGIC CPD Webinar on September 16 – ISO37000 – Governance of Organizations Setting the Standard for Ethical and Effective Governance

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the first ever international benchmark for good governance in 2021. The International Standard, ISO 37000, provides guidance for the governance of organizations and a common language for all sizes and types of organizations across jurisdictions.

“The pursuit of purpose is at the centre of all organizations and is, therefore, of primary importance for the governance of organizations. Good governance of organizations lays the foundation for the fulfilment of the purpose of the organization in an ethical, effective and responsible manner in line with stakeholder expectations.” ISO 37000:2021

Good governance not only builds trust; it improves business performance and contributes to social and environmental integrity. ISO 37000 provides governing bodies with the tools they need to govern well, such that their organizations can perform effectively while behaving ethically and responsibly.

Content: This session will introduce ISO 37000, the history and evolution of the Standard, and provide an overview of the conditions required for effective governance, its integration throughout the organization and the role, composition, structure and competence of the Governing Body. We examine the primary governance principle of Purpose and what that means in practice. Then we identify and briefly analyse each of the other ten principles of ISO37000:
• Foundational governance principles – Value generation, Strategy, Oversight, Accountability.
• Enabling governance principles – Stakeholder engagement, Leadership, Data and decisions, Risk governance, Social responsibility, Viability and performance over time.

This session will also cover the governance outcomes that can be expected by applying the principles of ISO 37000, and the benefits for an organization in doing so, particularly with reference to the competitive edge, reputation and sustainability an organization can achieve through adopting the ISO 37000 governance framework. Finally, we explore how CGIC members can become thought leaders in governance by qualifying as ISO 37000 certified practitioners and trusted board advisors.

Outcomes and Benefits: CGIC members will understand the ISO 37000 conditions, principles and outcomes at a high level, appreciate the primary governance principle of purpose, and receive a clear pathway to becoming ISO 37000 certified practitioners and thereby equipped with the skills to develop and/or improve the governance framework for their organization.

Who Will Benefit By Attending: All classes of CGIC members and students, Board directors, Trustees, Company Secretaries, Executives and Leaders, ESG and GRC practitioners, Auditors, Accountants, Compliance professionals, Risk professionals, Regulators, Council members and students of governance and business science.
