At its Greater Purpose Conference East on October 28, 2026, The Canadian Purpose Economy Project honoured the collective leadership of The Chartered Governance Institute of Canada, Governance Professionals of Canada, The Directors College, Canadian Bar Association In-House Lawyers, and Competent Boards with the Peter ter Weeme Purpose Economy Champion Award for their contributions to advancing purpose governance in Canada.
The five leading governance and professional organizations were recognized for their collaborative leadership in bringing purpose into the Canadian boardroom and strengthening understanding of the board’s role in governing organizational purpose.
Since 2023, CGIC has proudly participated in the Canadian Purpose Governance Collaboration, working alongside its partners to advance purpose governance education and practice across Canada.
Together, the organizations have endorsed the Purpose Governance Guidelines in principle, collaborated on The State of Purpose Governance in Canada report, endorsed A Call to Purpose, delivered national webinars, and integrated purpose governance into governance education and professional development programs. Through these efforts, they have helped equip directors, governance professionals, and in-house counsel to govern purpose through strategy, risk oversight, culture, ethics, and decision-making.
“We are honoured to receive the Peter ter Weeme Purpose Economy Champion Award alongside our partners. This recognition reflects the power of collaboration and our shared commitment to advancing purpose as a cornerstone of good governance.”
Patricia Thacker, Executive Director, The Chartered Governance Institute of Canada
This sustained collaboration has helped move purpose governance from an emerging concept toward an established and increasingly important element of governance education and practice in Canada. The award recognizes the collective leadership and commitment of the participating organizations in helping build the governance capacity needed to advance Canada’s purpose economy.
