SESSION DETAILS:
The internal responsibility system as it forms the foundation of the Health and Safety Act and reporting requirements for occupational illness given the state of the world and global pandemic. Also, highlights of the program will extend to employer or supervisor requirements (due diligence) and work refusals including legislative compliance.
SPEAKER BIO:
Michael Benedict, Professor – Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance is an alumnus of Trent University and Fleming College, Michael began his career in the Ontario Public Service with the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) in the summer of 2002 with their first uniformed inspection team performing roadside emission inspections of heavy vehicles.
In 2001, following the tragic events in Walkerton, the Ministry of the Environment formed a new uniformed inspection team that performed complex inspections across the province. Michael served in that team as an inspector for one year performing inspections of hazardous waste transfer and processing sites before being promoted to supervisor of the same unit.
In 2003 Michael left the MOE to join the Ministry of Labour in the Peterborough district office as an industrial Health and Safety Inspector. Between 2003 and 2018 Michael conducted thousands of inspections and investigations relating to worker safety with expertise and knowledge of what ministry inspectors are looking for when determining a workplace or person has been duly diligent.
In 2014 Michael proposed and wrote the curriculum for a new post-graduate program at Fleming College entitled “Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance”. Michael accepted a full-time position at the College as a professor and program coordinator of that program
